ABOUT
concept
I was inspired by the idea of what a modern, working woman cycling to work in NYC would wear.
scope
I designed and produced a small run of beer koozies made out of kevlar. The project was a part of Mother Good’s ‘Kickback’ collection which raises awareness for gun violence in the US.
materials
two weights of kevlar
Kevlar is best known for its use in bulletproof vests. Kevlar is tightly woven plastic fibers which creates a material that is lightweight with a high tensile strength. Multiple layers of Kevlar is enough to stop a bullet.

ITERATION 1
concept
I created a foldable sleeve made with two layers of of kevlar, flipped right side out, and hand sewed the side seams
finishings
I tried cross stitched and flat felled side seam closures.
learnings
I pivoted ideas because the hand-stitched seam gave the design too much of a hand-made feel for the client.
ITERATION 2
concept
Opting for a more modern design, I moved away from sewing and used glue to attach the outer and inner layers of kevlar to a cylindrical foam base.

outcome
The client loved this prototype so I went forward with it and created twenty koozies.
FINAL THOUGHTS
deliverables
I constructed 20 pieces which are now being sold on the Mother Good website.
